Yesterday evening I participated in a webinar offered by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA): Certification Process from Start to Finish. I was honored to be one of two panelists sharing their experience on the Certification process.
The attendees asked some great questions (well over 100 questions were posted to the Q&A), and I learned [...]
OurPPA is the online community for members of the Professional Photographers of America. If you’re not a PPA member, you can still access a few areas of the forum, so I’d encourage you to check it out either way.
I have been a member of OurPPA since its inception in 2005 (give or take a [...]
I recently received an email from a photographer who was studying for the Certification exam — and it was mentioned to me that I hadn’t written anything about the Image Review portion of the certification process. So I decided to fill that void.
“I should have no problem taking and passing the written portion of the [...]
I recently found the online study guide for Barbara London’s “Photography” 9th edition. So, I wanted to share, since this is now the “official” version being used for the Certification. Of course, content usually doesn’t vary too much between editions, which is why some people I know have used older editions of Barbara London’s “Photography” [...]

I admit, I haven’t completely read Basic Photographic Materials and Processes yet. But I wanted to give you an idea of what the text covers. It is actually very interesting to me, and I plan on completing the text soon.
Basic Photographic Materials and Processes discusses [...]
Photography 9e can now be ordered on Amazon.com (released in 2007). In case you’re still contemplating the purchase of this text, you may want to consider just ordering the newest edition. Although I can hazard a guess that the layout, text, and topics covered won’t change too much between the editions, I think that some [...]
If you plan on using the companion website to test how much you learn each chapter, please be aware that there are some “issues” with a few of the questions. I recently used Photography, 8th Edition as a study guide for earning my certification. I found the Companion Website to be invaluable (http://wps.prenhall.com/hss_london_photo_8) for [...]
Everything you wanted to know, even some things you didn’t!
Going into the certification process, there was not a lot of information available to me as to exactly what I needed to do to become certified. Of course there’s the certification website, which does provide the basic information; but to get a full feel for what [...]
I think a lot of the information within Don Blair’s The Portrait is timeless information. Although produced by KODAK, the text of the book was written by Don Blair. As you read through the book, Don’s personable style of writing gives you insight to his personality, the way he ran his business, and his love [...]
The Photographer’s Handbook contained A LOT of information, much of which was a review for me. Everything from Cameras and equipment, film and darkrooms, to studios and lighting was covered. There were even sections on composition and “special” types of photography, such as underwater and night sky photography.
Not intended for a casual read, this book [...]
