There is nothing wrong with doing what you love for a living, though entering a new profession with an unrealistic expectations can limit potential for growth and success. Many photographers decided to enter the industry without fully evaluating the marketplace, the demographics, and other trends. In fact, some first become interested in photography as a hobby, and then decide to turn that hobby into a profession.
There are a number of good resources for photographers looking to “get their numbers straight.” Past President of PPA, Ann Monteith, discusses what an 8×10 costs on her blog (a demonstration that professional prints really aren’t overpriced). The Professional Photographers of America (PPA) have done a couple benchmark surveys to see a “snapshot of the industry” — check out their Studio Financial Benchmark Survey Analysis, and compare your studio’s performance to those of similar studios acrosss the country.
