Success in Print Competition

Patrick Rice’s “Success in Print Competition” was a very helpful book as I prepared to enter my first competition. Since I hadn’t been to a print competition before and was not familiar with what to expect, being able to learn from “Success in Print Competition” gave me a better understanding of what types of images are (and aren’t) competition worthy. Patrick discusses the key elements of award-winning images (actually, he has condensed PPA’s “12 elements of a Merit Print” into 5 concepts), as well as the importance of printing, composition, and mounting.

I came away from reading “Success in Print Competition” with more confidence and understanding of what print competition would be like. Of course, reading about something is never the same as the actual experience – but if you’re looking to get your feet wet and want to have some idea of what to expect, this book will be a good investment.

One of the key statements in this book is “You Can’t learn if you don’t try.” Participating in print competition is about more than winning awards. It’s about learning and improving yourself as a photographer – when you begin to look at your images with an eye tuned for competition, you will inevitably produce better work for your clients.
