Image: Designing Effective Pictures

Michael Freeman’s Image: Designing Effective Pictures is a good starting point for getting you to think more about composition. It covers many of the basics you would learn in a design class (but applied to photographic images). Points, line, texture, and color theory are all discussed; images are provided as examples every step of the way. The author includes “projects” in most sections of the book – I thought this was an ingenious way to try out the concepts discussed – or at least get you thinking about how to apply the concepts to your own work.

The example images in the text are very helpful – there are also diagrams to convey the breakdown of shapes and lines within the image. If you have never taken a design course, this book will get you thinking about how to improve upon your composition techniques, and how you can use different lenses to strengthen different concepts you want your image to convey.

I would recommend this book if you want to gain further insight on how to improve your composition techniques, and if you want to have more influence over the emotion/mood conveyed in the image.
